‘The Mummy’ reboot trailer is here, internet reacts

There’s a new ‘Mummy’ in town, and the internet has feelings about it…

As part of an effort to revamp, modernize and expand on the cinematic universe of their classic monsters, Universal is rebooting The Mummy franchise with an all-new film starring Tom Cruise. The reboot also stars Sofia Boutella as “an ancient princess  whose destiny was unjustly taken from her” who is “awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.” Additional stars include Annabelle Wallis, Jake JohnsonCourtney B. Vance, and Russell Crowe.

While 1999’s The Mummy starring Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz and Arnold Vosloo was a loose remake of the 1932 film which starred Boris Karloff in the title role, 2017’s The Mummy puts a new spin on the franchise, as is evident in the trailer. One interesting point of note: the fact that they’ve placed a female in the title monster role, with director/producer Alex Kurtzman telling EW: “For me, making the Mummy a woman was the reason to make the movie.”

The overall goal for Universal is to revitalize their classic monsters and create a shared cinematic universe for them in the way that Marvel has done with its characters.

The denizens of Twitter have been quick to respond to the trailer, with a number of folks initially lamenting the the idea of a Brendan-Fraserless reboot:

Others noted the new film’s apparent heavy slant towards the “action” genre.

While a number simply seem excited to experience whatever treasures the new ‘Mummy’ and its stars will bestow upon us:

Meanwhile, this guy definitely seems excited about it:

What do you think of the rebooted The Mummy trailer? Are you excited about the idea of a Universal monsters shared cinematic universe? And what about the fact the new title monster is a female?
