There’s a new ‘Mummy’ in town, and the internet has feelings about it…
As part of an effort to revamp, modernize and expand on the cinematic universe of their classic monsters, Universal is rebooting The Mummy franchise with an all-new film starring Tom Cruise. The reboot also stars Sofia Boutella as “an ancient princess whose destiny was unjustly taken from her” who is “awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.” Additional stars include Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance, and Russell Crowe.
While 1999’s The Mummy starring Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz and Arnold Vosloo was a loose remake of the 1932 film which starred Boris Karloff in the title role, 2017’s The Mummy puts a new spin on the franchise, as is evident in the trailer. One interesting point of note: the fact that they’ve placed a female in the title monster role, with director/producer Alex Kurtzman telling EW: “For me, making the Mummy a woman was the reason to make the movie.”
The overall goal for Universal is to revitalize their classic monsters and create a shared cinematic universe for them in the way that Marvel has done with its characters.
